Best flight ticket bargains for corporate organizations

Are you looking for the best day to book flights? Well, here are some ways you can save serious money on a planned travel. The key to booking cheap flights lies in making your travel plans much ahead. This gives you time to do some research and save on the cost of air travel. Travelling by flight is the quickest means to reaching your destination. However often people travel via road or rail to cut the cost on expensive fares. If they were to plan ahead they can get the best of both worlds.

Here are some easy tips to booking flights. Most flights operate on a Monday to Sunday schedule. As most travelers prefer to take weekend flights to spend the weekend with their family and friends or be early for a business meet on Mondays the flight are usually crammed. The cost of such flights is often unreasonable as there is more demand than supply. If you have to travel during weekends the best day to book flights is the Sunday previous to the date of your travel. Most business people book flights during the week as their schedules are often fixed at short notice. If you are going through a travel agent you must specify that he purchases the tickets at the lowest cost and give him a good week ahead to plan the purchase of the ticket.

Again, if you plan to book the international flights, the best day to book flights is the last day of the previous month. Every month beginning makes the travel date look closer to others while every previous month end makes it seem distant. Take advantage of this little trick if you can, when you book your next flight. Most domestic flight booking can be done similarly if you have sufficient notice on your travel.

Tuesday nights and early Wednesday mornings are great time to make a booking. If you can book a flight at 12:01 am, the best fares are available. This is due to the fact that all tickets held by individuals and parties kept on courtesy hold go back onto the market at a discounted rate which makes Wednesday the best day to book flights. You can be lucky to get some on the mid week flight booking.

Timing the purchase is everything in air travel. Often people spend thousands on flights and land in a crowded flight which offers them poor choice of seating arrangements. Moreover, there are frequent delays for crowded flights as the company is expecting most of it passengers to onboard and tends to extend the check in time. Sometimes the service onboard suffers for want of sufficient crew staff to manage demanding customers. In light of this, it's most appropriate to avoid such flights as they burn a hole in your pocket and are a bad bargain for the money spent.

To choose the best day to book flights you should watch offers given by airliners which indicate their low volume days.

A HEALTHY GUIDE TO WHITE TEETH

It is a human tendency to invite problems first and then find a solution to evade them. You need to always remember that once damage is done it will be difficult to recover from it. So today let's take look at the most common dental problems.

1. Tooth Decay:

This is also known as Dental Caries or Dental Cavities. Eating too much sugary foods or consuming food rich in starch leaves a sticky film on our teeth. This sticky film is called as Plaque. The reason for Tooth Decay is formation of plaque. There is no age criterion to fall for this condition. However kids and elderly people are most prone to tooth decay. The best way to avoid this condition is by following the regular dental hygiene. Make sure that you brush twice a day followed by flossing and use of fluoride based mouthwash.
2. Gum Disease:

When plaque is not treated it will start attacking gums, the bones and the ligament. This is when you start suffering from Gum Disease which later on takes the form of Gingivitis and thereafter Periodontal Disease. If you reach the stage of Periodontal Disease then the only treatment available for you will be tooth extraction. If stats are to be believed then it is shocking to know that nearly half of the global population suffers from Gingivitis. Yet again there is no age criterion for this condition so anyone who has a poor oral hygiene or suffers from chronic disease and smokers are at high risk. To understand that you are suffering from gum disease you need to check your gums regularly to see if they are bleeding or you feel them to be tender. You can recover from Gingivitis by simply brushing regularly. However Periodontitis requires deep cleaning or if it is too serious then Bone graft or tooth extraction may be required.

3. Tooth Infection:

This happens when you damage the nerves or it becomes infected due to decay or any sort of accident. When suffering from this condition you might have to seek help from an Endodontist who will perform Root Canal Treatment. Once the procedure is complete your teeth will be sealed by Porcelain or Gold Crown.
4. Enamel Erosion:

This is the condition when the outer layer of your teeth starts to erode. You suffer from Enamel Erosion when you consume too much of soda or citrus drinks. Their consumption can make your enamel round and discolored. The best way to get rid of this condition is by changing your eating habits. Get over soft drinks and wine. However if you cannot leave soft drinks then drink them by straw. After consuming wine ensure that you swish your mouth with water so that any leftover trace of wine can be removed.
These were some of the most common dental problem that we undergo during our lifetime. These are all avoidable if we follow proper dental hygiene on a regular basis.

Dr. Sunil Phol is a cosmetic dentistry specialist in Thailand. Having nearly 2 decades of experience, he believes that as we grow, we become less careful towards our health and because of our erratic eating habits we spoil our mouth and teeth to a great extent. So here he is letting out all the knowledge that he can, related to teeth problems and some common procedures that is carried out. TALIBAN ATTACK BACHA KHAN UNIVERSITY, KILLS 19

Militants raided a university in northwest PakistanWednesday, timing their attack to a ceremony at the school to ensure maximum casualties. They slaughtered at least 19 people, authorities said.

The scent of burning metal hung in the air a few hours after the attack as a CNN crew made its way through the building where many were shot and wounded. Blood covered stairwells, the walls were pockmarked by bullets. Some of the students' laundry still hung in a courtyard.

Bacha Khan University is in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, of which Peshawar is the provincial capital. The city, less than 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Charsadda, is where the Pakistani Taliban slayed 145 people, including 132 children, in a school attack in December 2014.

It's unclear whether the group was responsible for the carnage that Mehmood Khan, provincial home minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said killed at least 19 people along with four terrorists. He expects the death toll of the innocent to rise.

One Pakistani Taliban spokesman, Umar Mansoor, said the attack was in retaliation for military operations against the group. Mansoor was also the mastermind behind the December 2014 attack, Pakistan's DawnNews reported.

But another spokesman, Mohammad Khurrassani, from the Pakistani Taliban's central organization, disavowed any role.

We "strongly condemn the attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsadda and disown the attack, saying this is not according to Shariah," Khurrassani said.

WHAT IS BITCOIN?

With the Bitcoin price so volatile everyone is curious. Bitcoin, the category creator of blockchain technology, is the World Wide Ledger yet extremely complicated and no one definition fully encapsulates it. By analogy it is like being able to send a gold coin via email.

It is a consensus network that enables a new payment system and a completely digital money. It is the first decentralized peer-to-peer payment network that is powered by its users with no central authority or middlemen.

Bitcoin was the first practical implementation and is currently the most prominent triple entry bookkeeping system in existence.

Who created Bitcoin?
The first Bitcoin specification and proof of concept was published in 2009 by an unknown individual under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto who revealed little about himself and left the project in late 2010. The Bitcoin community has since grown exponentially.

Satoshi's anonymity often raises unjustified concerns because of a misunderstanding of the open-source nature of Bitcoin. Everyone has access to all of the source code all of the time and any developer can review or modify the software code. As such, the identity of Bitcoin's inventor is probably as relevant today as the identity of the person who invented paper.

Who controls the Bitcoin network?
Nobody owns the Bitcoin network much like no one owns the technology behind email or the Internet. Bitcoin transactions are verified by Bitcoin miners which has an entire industry and Bitcoin cloud mining options.

While developers are improving the software they cannot force a change in the Bitcoin protocol because all users are free to choose what software and version they use. In order to stay compatible with each other, all users need to use software complying with the same rules.

Bitcoin can only work correctly with a complete consensus among all users. Therefore, all users and developers have a strong incentive to protect this consensus.

How does Bitcoin work?
From a user perspective, Bitcoin is nothing more than a mobile app or computer program that provides a personal Bitcoin wallet and enables a user to send and receive bitcoins.

Behind the scenes, the Bitcoin network is sharing a massive public ledger called the "block chain". This ledger contains every transaction ever processed which enables a user's computer to verify the validity of each transaction.

The authenticity of each transaction is protected by digital signatures corresponding to the sending addresses therefore allowing all users to have full control over sending bitcoins. Thus, there is no fraud, no chargebacks and no identifying information that could be compromised resulting in identity theft.

To learn more about Bitcoin, you can consult the original Bitcoin whitepaper, read through the extremely thorough Frequently Asked Questions, listen to a Bitcoin podcast or read the latest Bitcoin news.

Sponsors for free Bitcoins
Many people new to Bitcoin are curious about how to get some. Bitcoin faucets, places where bitcoins are given away for free, have been a part of spreading Bitcoin since the earliest days. But one problem is running out of bitcoins to give! That is why we have figured out a sustainable way to give away free bitcoins with sponsors.

TEXAS EXECUTES CONVICT FOR RAPE, MURDER

The latest on the scheduled execution of Texas inmate Richard Masterson, who was convicted in a 2001 strangulation that he claimed was accidental.

Texas has executed a man convicted of a killing 15 years ago in the state's first lethal injection of 2016.

Richard Masterson had claimed the January 2001 strangulation of Darin Honeycutt was accidental and had several appeals before the courts. His last-day efforts to stop his execution were rejected.

He was pronounced dead at 6:53 p.m. Wednesday.

Masterson had testified at his trial that the death of the 35-year-old Honeycutt in Houston happened accidentally during a chokehold that was part of a sex act. The two had met at a bar and then went to Honeycutt's apartment.

Honeycutt was an entertainer who performed dressed as a woman. Honeycutt's stage name was Brandi Houston.

Court records showed Masterson confessed to police, told others about the killing and acknowledged Honeycutt was slain on purpose in a letter to the Texas attorney general in 2012.

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to stop the execution of a Texas man for a killing 15 years ago that he claimed was accidental.

The high court rejected four appeals for 43-year-old Richard Masterson on Wednesday evening, less than an hour before he was to be taken to the death chamber.

Earlier in the day, Texas' top criminal court also refused to block the punishment, rejecting an appeal challenging a state law that keeps secret the name of the execution drug supplier.

Masterson was convicted of the January 2001 strangulation of 35-year-old Darin Honeycutt in Houston. Masterson has said the death happened accidentally during a chokehold that was part of a sex act. The two had met at a bar and then went to Honeycutt's apartment.

SUICIDE ATTACK ALERT

A suicide bomber has attacked an area near the Russian embassy in the Afghan capital Kabul, officials say, killing at least four people.

Officials say about 20 others have been wounded.

The explosion sent black smoke billowing into the sky, with emergency services rushing to the scene.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast, but the Taliban will be the main suspects as they have launched attacks on the city in the past.

Tolo News reported that the bomb was detonated by a motorcycle rider who was targeting a civilian bus in the west of the city.

However, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that the explosion was caused by a car bomb.

The latest incident follows recent attacks near the Indian, Pakistani and Italian missions in Afghanistan.

Last week at least seven Afghan security personnel were killed in a gun battle near the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad.

Observers have speculated that the attacks could be aimed at destabilising attempts to revive peace talks with Taliban, but there is no confirmation.

LOOSE WEIGHT TODAY.

Weight loss can be challenging for many people. It can be confusing in terms of what you should and shouldn't do. Eating healthy and working out are a great start, but it's important to understand how to do that safely. Sometimes, it's a matter of changing just a few simple things. These easy tips can help get you going in the right direction.

1. Know How Many Calories You Need.

Knowing how much you should be taking in is important information. In order to calculate the number of calories for you to take in, it is necessary for you to calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate. An easy way to calculate this is to search for Basal Metabolic Rate in a search engine such as Google. We suggest the Harris Benedict Formula for Basal Metabolic Rate. Once this is calculated based on your activity level, you can adjust the number of calories towards weight loss. While calories aren't something to obsess over, it is very handy to know how much energy you should be taking in.

2. Portion Size Is Your Friend.

You may not like counting calories and portion size can be an equally great way to control what you're taking in. Taking in too many calories, consuming more than you are burning off, causes the body to store the excess calories as fat instead of being used for energy. This is why eating appropriate portion sizes can help you. Try measuring your food by using your hand. Meals can be structured by the "Eyeball Method". Choose a protein source that is equal to the size of the palm of your hand, carbohydrate source equal to the size of your clenched fist and fat portion equal to the tip of your thumb. The Eyeball Method can also help you choose portions when eating out or at eating at parties and friendly gatherings.

3. Burn More Than You Take In.

In order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you are taking in. This should be done by creating a calorie deficit of 500-1000 calories per day or a combination of a calorie deficit and deficit through exercise, such as a 500 calorie deficit and burning 500 calories through exercise. A 500 calorie deficit per day would equal a 1 pound weight loss per week (500 x 7 days in a week = 3500 calories. 3500 calories = 1 pound).

 4. Safe Weight Loss Is Important.

A weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week is the safest way to lose weight and maintain it. Any more than 2 pounds per week creates an unrealistic caloric deficit that cannot be sustained. This deficit sends the body into starvation mode because you are not taking in an adequate amount of calories to fuel the body properly. Starvation mode does not allow you to lose weight. Instead, the body holds on to everything you consume because it is trying to store the calories that come in for later as there is insufficient fuel coming in.

5. Pre And Post Workout Fuel.

It is essential to take in enough calories to fuel your workouts to get the most out of them. This means eating 1-2 hours before you workout so that you have enough fuel and replenishing your body with a balanced snack within a half an hour after you workout.

6. Make Your Workouts Count.

Why workout if you're not going to give it 100% and get as much as you can out of that workout? Going through the motions won't get you anywhere. When working out, it is critical to put in all of your effort and push yourself as hard as you can. This will ensure that you will get the most out of your workouts and the highest calorie burn. Working out at 50% will only burn 50% of the calories you want to burn.

DON'T WANNA GET FROZEN? THEN READ THIS

You don't have to be a stark to worry about winter. This season can bring anyone down with colds and flu. All the time, you don't need modern medicine to help you stay healthy this winter. Here are eight natural ways to prevent getting sick during the winter:

1. Drink plenty of fluids.
As winter brings dry air, staying hydrated throughout the day gets more challenging. Your body needs an adequate amount of fluids to function properly, immune system included. Always bring a bottle of water along with you.

2. Avoid sugary drinks because they can suppress your immune system. Drink herbal teas like chamomile, ginger root, and rose hip to improve your resistance against the cold. Make vegetable soups and broths and consume them throughout the week.

3. Use saline nasal flush.
Dry mucous membranes make you more susceptible to microbes. You can prevent this by flushing your sinuses with mild salt water daily. For nasal irrigation, you can use a neti pot or ready-to-use plastic bottles that come with saline packets.

4. Limit simple sugars from your diet. Simple sugars are also known as "empty calories" because they contain very little nutrients like fiber, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids. Limit your consumption of candies, cakes, cookies, syrups, sweetened drinks, and refined grain products. Several studies have shown that refined sugars can alter your immune system for several hours after consumption.

5. Include protein with every meal.
Your body requires protein to synthesize enzymes and other materials needed by the immune system. Get protein from different sources such as seafood, white-meat poultry, yogurt, eggs, beans, and nuts.

6. Eat lots of colorful fruits and vegetables.
These foods contain vitamins A and C and phyto-nutrients, which boost the immune system. Consume at least five servings of vegetables and at least three servings of fruits a day. Prepare food with garlic, onion, ginger, and other spices. Garlic and onions have antimicrobial properties that help you fight off infection.

7. Get enough sleep every night.
Sleep helps restore and heal the body. You need adequate sleep to keep your immune system in optimum condition. Establish a healthy sleep-wake cycle by getting to bed early during the long winter nights. Try to get seven or eight hours of sleep each night. If you have difficulty sleeping, try using relaxation and breathing techniques to help get rid of stress and quiet your mind.

8. Exercise regularly.
Several studies have linked moderate, regular exercise to a healthy immune system. Exercise increases the production of macrophages (bacteria-killing cells) and improves circulation of immune cells to help fight off bacteria and viruses.

Life is short. Everyone wants to succeed in the life. But what makes a person's life a success is still a big question. Many attributes are related to success that range from physical to mental counts, hard skills to soft skills, hard works, thought-process, dreams, reality, happiness, hardship and what not! Factors that have an effect on and affect the success in life also vary. In a broader aspect, three things actually determine the ultimate SUCCESS of life: • Health • Skills • Money BE THE PILOT OF YOUR LIFE Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/9285209

THE NOT SO COMMON FLU SHOT

The flu shot will help protect you from this virus during the season. Not only will it keep you healthy and get you through the whole year but it is also a good idea to get yourself vaccinated if you are around children and elderly people. If you fall ill, there is a big chance that people around you fall ill too and this could get dangerous for those who do not have a good immune system. Those Who Are At Risk Children and senior citizens suffering from various diseases related to the lungs or heart and smokers are often most at risk. A simple case of flu could lead to ear infections, bronchitis and even pneumonia in these people. In fact, those over the age of 65 should also consider taking the pneumonia vaccine during this season. Even though a healthy individual may only suffer from this virus for a few days and then get back to routine, one dose a year will not do you any harm and it could help protect the people around you. Only those who are allergic to the vaccine or any of the ingredients present in it should avoid taking it. Children below the age of 6 months should also not be given the dose. When to Get the Shot It takes about two weeks after you get the injection for the antibodies to build up in your system. This means that you should ideally get vaccinated as soon as possible. Waiting a little longer will only increase the chances of the virus entering your body before the antibodies have taken effect. The shot will then not be able to fight off the flu. However, you should also remember that it is never too late to get the vaccine. Even if you take it in February, it could still protect you from getting ill in March. A few minutes to get yourself protected will help you control the sick days at the office and also cut down on the insurance costs. Ways You can Get the Flu Shot If you are scared of needles, it shouldn't prevent you from getting the flu shot this year. Small children have the option of nasal spray flu vaccine so that they do not feel any pain at all while being given the dose. However, this spray is not recommended for women who are pregnant. Adults also have the option of intradermal flu vaccine. The fine needle used to give this dose only penetrates the skin so you will not feel any pain. Those suffering from an egg allergy can also get a cell-based vaccine. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com

RAREST PHONES EVER, AND THIS IS WHY.

How much money do you think a cell phone should go for? The answer to that question will vary from one individual to another, but one thing we can all agree is that a cell phone has got to be worth what it is going for in stores or online. Today, a basic phone ought to be able to make a call, send out a text, take a clear picture, and access the Internet, functions that almost all the phones in the market today can execute.

One common trait among most of the extremely rich people is that they usually spend a lot of money on items that they could spend less on, just because they can. An extremely rich person will likely buy a product in the most luxurious shops in town, or even fly halfway across the world to purchase a particular product just because it is a designer. The extremely rich like to be in a class of their own and the size of their wallets or bank accounts allow them to live comfortably in that class.

With the above in mind, some people have developed ridiculously expensive cell phones that the average person could never afford; simply because they know that a rich person somewhere will want to be one among very few people in the world to own such a phone. Most of these phones do not have the amazing features that some other affordable phones in the market have, but just because they are designed for the rich, you will hardly ever find any of these on a shelf.

Here are the world’s most luxurious cell phones ever made. Would you buy any one of these?

4. Vertu Signature Cobra – $310,000

Ever heard of the Vertu signature Cobra phone? Well, if you haven’t, then you should be happy because this could very well be your next phone upgrade, or not. If you are one of those people who hate peer pressure and think that the touchscreen phones are overrated, and a small screen is all you need, then you will love this phone. In addition to its ability to do what your average phone can do, the Vertu signature Cobra has precious stones all over it; the reason for its outrageous $310,000 price tag. Furthermore, the phone has a round white diamond that looks like a cobra, two emeralds made to look like the cobra’s eyes, one pearl-cut diamond, and 439 rubies. The phone is not so much about beauty as it is about luxury, which is why only eight of these were produced.

3. Gresso Luxor Las Vegas Jackpot – $1 million

Instead of buying that house that you have been saving up for, how about a Gresso Luxor Las Vegas Jackpot phone? Yes, a phone, and you will only need a million dollars to own it. This phone might sound ridiculously expensive, but when you consider that it has 45.5 K black diamonds on its front, 200-year-old African Blackwood on its back, and a 12mm frame made of 180 grammes of pure gold, you can see where all the money is going. Furthermore, the Gresso’s keypad has 17 laser-etched 32 K sapphires that are a delight to touch, all of which are manually polished. However, since you cannot find these phones in the market because only three of these exist, you might be better off buying that house instead.

2. Diamond Crypto Smartphone – $1.3 million

Do you love diamonds? Would you love a phone that uses “powerful encryption technology” that protects your information against kidnapping, one that can protect you from technological blackmail, financial racketeers, and corrupt state officials? Then you have to get a Diamond Crypto Smartphone, all you have to part with is $1.3 million. This phone is not like the other Smartphones in the market because it comes with 50 diamonds, of which 10 are blue diamonds, carefully placed on its body to make it look like a jewel. If something ever happens to the phone and you are unable to communicate, you could always remove the diamonds and sell them for a fortune.

1. GoldVish Le Million – $1.45 million

When the Swiss manufacturer GoldVish makes a phone, the name itself will tell you that the phone belongs to a class of its own. Specialised in manufacturing high-class luxury phones by combining Swiss artistry and high-end technology, it is no surprise to find the GoldVish le Million making it in this list of the most expensive phones in the world. This phone has one of the most outstanding shapes out there, but what makes it different from all the rest is its body covered with 18 carats of gold, 120 carats of diamonds, and some platinum as well. Although only three pieces of this phone are available in the market, getting your hands on one of these has got to be an exciting experience.

CHILDHOOD BLUES : CONCLUSION OF PART 1

I sincerely apologize for the delay in follow up of the story. Its been due to my busy schedule. Thanks

 CONCLUSION OF PART 1
I'll deal with you, the english teacher announced with her igbo intonation. 'You are trying to make fun, you bloody badger', she said again. It was then it dawned on me that I'd overstepped my 'vocabulary allowance boundary', or did it mean Mrs. Obiora couldnt comprehend what i meant, 'what a dull lady', i said to myself. I finally decided to face my demons. As i made to walk to the front of the class to serve my unjustified punishment, hearing little chants here and there, Mrs. Obiora red-eyed already. 'Oh how i wish the ground could open up right now.' Being a military school, i was made to clear portions of grass for the rest of the day. I cursed under my breath as i swung the cutlass back and forth, since bush clearing was never my thing in the first place, I'll just do this haphazardly i thought to myself. Then i saw something unimaginable... To be continued.... Watch out for PART 2 tommorow by 11a.m

MLK DAY

This Monday, Americans commemorate the 30th anniversary of the federal holiday in honor of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

It's a holiday that thankfully has been gaining in recognition since Congress passed a bill and President Ronald Reagan signed it in 1983, designating the third Monday in January, starting in 1986, to honor the civil rights leader. For years, some states declined to participate in the holiday, and Arizona lost the opportunity to host a Super Bowl over it. In 2000, South Carolina became the last state to recognize the holiday.

Still, a Bloomberg BNA survey found last year that fewer than 40% of American workers are given the day off -- about the same as Presidents Day and far behind the nearly universal observance of such holidays as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day.

Whether or not you have the day off, it's worth reflecting on the life and philosophy of the man we honor Monday.

Had an assassin's bullet not taken his life at the age of 39, King would have turned 87 on Friday.

Had he lived, I believe King would have continued to inspire hope and would challenge us to fulfill his dream of a more inclusive society -- where everyone would have an equal opportunity for "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

No doubt King, who was passionate about justice and equality for all, would have been proud of all the milestones we have achieved as a nation, including the election of our first black president of the United States. Nevertheless, King would have urged us to move beyond our internal divisions of political partisanship and to find common ground.

King believed that "hate is too great a burden to bear" and that we should not "seek to satisfy our thirst of freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred."

Tsai Ing-wen (Chinese: 蔡英文; pinyin: Cài Yīngwén; born 31 August 1956) is the president-elect of the Republic of China(Taiwan) and the first female elected to the office.[1] She is also the first president-elect to be of Hakka and Aboriginal descent (1/4 Paiwan from her grandmother), first single president and the first to have never held a position of an elected post. She is the second female president of East Asian nations after current South Korea President Park Geun-hye. Tsai ran for New Taipei City mayorship in the November 2010 municipal electionsbut was defeated by another former vice premier, Eric Chu (KMT). In April 2011, Tsai became the first female presidential candidate of a major party in the history of the Republic of China after defeating her former superior, Su Tseng-chang, in the DPP's primary by a slight margin. She was defeated by incumbent Kuomintang candidate Ma Ying-jeou in the 5th direct presidential election in 2012, and was elected by a landslide four years later in the 6th direct presidential election in 2016

TAIWAN GETS HER FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT

Taipei (CNN)Taiwan has elected its first female president in a landmark election that could unsettle relations with Beijing.

Tsai Ing-wen, leader of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won the presidency with 56.1% of the vote, the official Central News Agency said, after eight years under the government of the pro-China Kuomintang (KMT) or Nationalist Party.

Eric Chu, the Nationalist Party candidate in Taiwan's presidential election conceded defeat late Saturday and congratulated rival Tsai Ing-wen on her victory, the agency added.

Her supporters filled streets, waving party banners and cheering to victory announcements made from a stage.

The election also marked the first time the KMT has lost control of the island's legislature. The DPP took 68 of the 113 seats in Taiwan's parliament compared to the KMT's 35.

At a post-election news conference, Tsai underscored Taiwan's commitment to democracy, calling it a value "deeply engrained in the Taiwanese people."

"Our democratic way of life is forever the resolve of Taiwan's 23 million people," she said.

But later in her speech, she also acknowledged the tenuous relationship with Beijing, saying both sides "have a responsibility to do their utmost to find mutually acceptable ways to interact ... and ensure no provocation and no surprises."

Congratulations President Tsai ing-wen.

STORY OF FORCED CHILD MARRIAGES

When I was a little girl growing up in Bangladesh, my mother would tell me that going to school was okay, but if I didn't do well, she would marry me off to a rich older man who could take care of me. It is many years later, but those words still affect me.

She wasn't the only family member trying to marry me off young.

My grandfather had plans for me to marry my first cousin who was 20 years older than me, but he passed away before he could make it happen.

All of this marriage talk is part of a deep-rooted tradition to keep women under control and maintain family honour.

But I couldn't accept this fate.

When I was young, my family moved to Los Angeles.

Suddenly I was exposed to a different world, that didn't match my family's values at home and I began to rebel, upsetting my traditional Bangladeshi Muslim parents.

I couldn't adapt to my family's mindset. There were too many rules. I had to excel in school, avoid boys, learn the Quran and dress conservatively. My mother even threw away the tank tops and shorts I had bought in secret.

I remember the day my uncle said my pants were too tight and that I shamed my family by dating a Hindu boy, l brushed him off, and laughed in his face. But he had much more control over my life than I thought.

When I was 16, my aunt heard of a rich man in his 40s who wanted to marry a young girl. My uncle wanted this marriage to happen.

I was flown to Canada to visit my relatives, thinking I was going on an unexpected vacation. When I reached my aunt's house, she had cooked an elaborate Bengali meal, and I saw a pudgy, old, balding Bangladeshi man sitting across the room. After dinner, my aunt suddenly left me alone with him. The moment we spoke, I knew exactly what was going on. He boasted about the property he owned, family prosperity and how his family had millions of dollars. He then proceeded to ask what I was looking for in a man. I froze.

I've blocked out most of the memories of that day, apart from feeling overwhelmed, sitting in a room full of people trying to decide my life for me. All I remember is keeping the conversation short and leaving my aunt's as quickly as possible. I then ran away from home.

I am one of very few women who was able to get away. Despite it being illegal, Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriage for girls under the age of 15 in the world. According to UNICEF, 65 percent of girls are married by their 18th birthday and 29 percent by the age of 15.

'They reminded me of cattle at the market waiting to be sold'

This past month, I travelled across northern Bangladesh, which has some of the highest rates of child marriage in the country. I wanted to know why it continues to happen, generation after generation.

I met eight girls along the way. Since the weddings often happen in secret, they take place very quickly. Each girl I encountered looked terrified. They shook in fear, cried, and looked confused. They reminded me of cattle at the market waiting to be sold. Seeing them so helpless was hard to bear.

Khadija Begum is one of those girls. I met her on her wedding day. She was 12. Her family is poor and her father had saved up enough dowry money to marry her to a 30-year-old rickshaw puller.

On the morning of Khadija's wedding, her parents sent her to hide at her grandparents' house, so authorities could not find out about her marriage. I went to see her.

"The marriage is happening against my will. I don't know why they are doing this," Khadija told me while staring at the ground.

I played a clapping game with her to distract her. She smiled. At that moment, I could see that she was just a child and her childhood and education were being taken away from her. She was helpless just like I was the day my aunt and uncle tried to marry me off, except she couldn't escape.

The men I spoke to during filming Too Young To Wed saw nothing wrong with marrying young girls.

Take Shyamal for instance. He is a 25-year-old tea-stall owner who wanted the youngest bride possible. He found a girl named Beezly whom he was willing to marry for less dowry money as she was 13. I saw him showing photos of his bride-to-be hours before his wedding, asking his friends if she looked young enough.

"I like her behaviour so I picked Beezly. She's pure. Most girls mix with other boys and have relations. I don't like that ... A good girl goes to school and straight home ... and that's it," Shyamal said.

This cultural mindset goes beyond poverty and a lack of education. To me it is all about controlling women. I am so grateful that I managed to escape that control. I am free and my future is my own, unlike thousands of young girls like Khadija and Beezly who are married off every year against their will.

LASSA FEVER : What to watch out for

Lassa fever or Lassa hemorrhagic fever (LHF) is an acute viral hemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus and first described in 1969 in the town of Lassa, in Borno state, Nigeria. Lassa fever is a member of the Arenaviridaevirus family. Similar to ebola, clinical cases of the disease had been known for over a decade, but had not been connected with a viral pathogen.

Signs and symptoms of Lassa fever typically occur 1-3 weeks after the patient comes into contact with the virus. For the majority of Lassa fever virus infections (approximately 80%), symptoms are mild and are undiagnosed. Mild symptoms include slight fever, general malaise and weakness, and headache. In 20% of infected individuals, however, disease may progress to more serious symptoms including hemorrhaging (in gums, eyes, or nose, as examples), respiratory distress, repeated vomiting, facial swelling, pain in the chest, back, and abdomen, and shock. Neurological problems have also been described, including hearing loss, tremors, and encephalitis. Death may occur within two weeks after symptom onset due to multi-organ failure.

The most common complication of Lassa fever is deafness. Various degrees of deafness occur in approximately one-third of infections, and in many cases hearing loss is permanent. As far as is known, severity of the disease does not affect this complication: deafness may develop in mild as well as in severe cases.

Approximately 15%-20% of patients hospitalized for Lassa fever die from the illness.

Because the symptoms of Lassa fever are so varied and nonspecific, clinical diagnosis is often difficult. Lassa fever is also associated with occasional epidemics, during which the case-fatality rate can reach 50% in hospitalized patients.

Remember to always wash your hands.

CHILDHOOD BLUES

It all began on a Monday morning. This young lady stepped into the class, and being my sensitive self, my deep-set eyes lit up at the beholdening of such resplendency. She was beaming from head to toe, a true epitome of beauty. She gave a true picture of my dream girl. Love at first sight i thought.

Ada was a 'born with a silver spoon' type of girl whose height, fair complexion were natural endowments. For her, she was a sensitive chic fully aware of her surroundings and had a knack for always having her way. Her good looks, charm very much camouflage d the fact that she smoked, drank with reckless abandon and indulged in every nefarious activity one could ever imagine.

I was still basking in the euphoria of  what my eyes beheld with my mouth agape when i felt a daze from behind. It was the teacher who'd been calling my name from behind. 'Oga Jude, could you please give the class an example of consonant clusters?' Being fully confident of the topic in question, i replied ; 'PRICK ma.'

My misery was about to be compounded as the whole class burst into laughter as i stood wondering how best was i to explain my point. I mean, to me it meant to pierce something with a sharp point and to the class maybe the informal meaning of the word, LOL.

To be continued......
